President's Message

Unit 142 of Pittsburgh is entering exciting times. Board members have stepped up to head
committees that will focus on the growth and better quality of face to face bridge games in our
area.

Here are the committees with the chairs that are committed to our vision:

  • Ronald Franck: President and Unit Manager
  • Bill Holt: Vice-President, Education Chair and Tournament Coordinator
  • Michael Pascal: Treasurer and Business Manager
  • Maureen Loeb: Secretary and Membership Chair
  • David Loeb: Webmaster and Special Games Chair
  • June Threlkeld: Pro-AM Chair and Charity Chair
  • James Gump: Club Liaison Chair
  • Terri Tunick: Intermediate/Beginner Chair, Publicity Chair and Facebook

As President, I am asking Unit 142 members to step up and volunteer in working with any of these committees. Also, please make an extra effort to attend local club games.

See you at the tables.

- Ron Franck
President

Kathryn Rector's Life Master Story

KathrynRectorThank you all for this marvelous stimulating frustrating game!

To obtain Life Master Level, it takes perseverance, travel (sometimes to interesting places, always involves $$), and interest in building mind skills. But, most importantly friends, mentors, and partners are critical.

Thanks to my fabulous partners and friends...Dina Fulmer, Robyn Fennel, and Midge Villella...who traveled with me to obtain those precious gold points!

As friends and family outside of the bridge community always ask...
What's the value of those points? Answer--PRICELESS.

The Unit 142 and District 5 Boards are considering adding more Sectional Tournament at Clubs (STaC) games to the schedule. 🎉

We want your input.

Most STaC games award silver points. We are allowed to hold up to 2 Royal STaC weeks which award gold, red, silver, and black points (25% each).

Education Update

Who wants to be ON A COMMITTEE? Okay it’s not anywhere near as bad as it sounds!
Teaching Bridge to beginners is Fun! And rewarding. And you don’t need to be an expert player to do it.

At present we have beginner lessons ongoing or scheduled in Glenshaw, Treesdale, Bridgeville,
Sewickley, and Mt. Lebanon. But as you can tell from our ‘table counts’, it’s not enough.
We need teachers! And helpers! Teachers run the class, but Bridge is best taught with a helper orthree in the class to answer at-table questions. And fill in as ‘players’ to make up a full table. And – it’s a blast. Really fun. And you will have the full support of the PBA Board for materials and assistance.

We are in need of a Teacher and helpers in the East Hills / Monroeville area. And we intend on
approaching gifted student programs throughout the area, to get Bridge into the schools. But we cannot contact these teachers before having our ducks in line, and enough people to handle
whatever demand may exist out there. Right now our ‘Education Committee’ includes Lorraine Hanna, David Loeb, Phylllis Geinzer, Todd Hertzberg, Ron Franck, and myself as chair. The more oars in the water, the faster the boat goes.

We will be growing education opportunities as more volunteers come forward. So if you’d like to
have an enjoyable experience, and keep the game you love alive and well in the ‘Burgh, contact me at burghboyb@gmail.com.

And, NO! You don’t gotta be on some committee!

~ Bill Holt
