Matchpoints, None Vulnerable

Sitting South, Here is your hand:

S: A J 6 3
H: 5
D: Q 10 7 5 3
C: 10 4 2

And the Bidding is:

West North East South
1NT (1) DBL (2) 2H (3) ????
  • (1) - 12-14
  • (2) - Penalty
  • (3) - Natural
  • What is your bid?
  • Judy Haffner: 2S I want to show some values. I wish double could be takeout over 2H—Not the case. If partner bids 2NT, I can show my diamonds. If partner bids 3 clubs I really love my hand and can Q-bid 3H. Passing if partner is rich in hearts was probably right. Tough problem.

Asim Ulke I bid 3H. It is an overbid but the transfer to 3D via Lebensohl or 2S risk being in the wrong suit even though it may be at a lower level. Double is not an option.

Jim Bossert: 2 spades. seems like i should bid something.

Jim Klein: I bid 3 Diamonds.  Partner will do something more if there is more in this deal.  I could have passed

Arlene Port: 2S. I have to lie about something in this hand. I choose to lie about the number of spades I have rather than misrepresenting the strength of my hand. After all, it IS my turn to bid!!

Ken Bergman: 2S. It is too dangerous to double. I will gamble at the two level.

Barb Bergman: Pass I don’t want to stick my neck out at IMP’s, vulnerable, especially if my partner’s double only shows equal values to the 1NT opener.

Florine Walters: Double.  Not strong enough for a cue bid of three hearts, and to bid three diamonds should probably be  more of a one suited hand with an option for your partner to bid 3 NT with a maximum. This leads me to Double, which should indicate that it is our hand, and partner should not be passing unless they have a very good heart holding.

Gail Carns: 3D : Positive non-forcing. I hope we don’t miss a 4-4 spade suit. Unfortunately, double here is not negative.

PJ Prabhu: Pass. Don't want to defend 2H; but any bid I make could get us in trouble. So I pass and hope partner can make a call

Richard Katz: 3H. The weak NT 12-14 hand is well placed and game is possible, as East is weak and squealed the distribution.
