INTERNET POST

By Arlene Port

You are South, Matchpoints, Both Vulnerable.

Here is your hand:

S - A Q 6 5 2
H - J
D - 6
C - Q J 10 9 7 4

The Bidding is:
West North East South
    3H ???

What is your bid???

Mary Carns: Pass.  My distribution is tempting but my hand isn't good enough.  In fact, I'm so lacking in values that it is likely that partner will reopen if it is in fact our hand.  If it instead goes 4H pass pass to me I bid 4S.

Bill Holt: I am passing for the moment. In my view there just isn't enough information available yet to know what is right. I need help from partner to make anything. If LHO bids 4H I will bid 4S. If this were a 3rd seat preempt the odds are better for me bidding. Beef up my suits a little and I might bid 3S.

Roni Gitchel: 4H - Should show spades and another suit. Partner can bid 4NT to ask for the minor.

Jim Bachelder: Pass  Well, this is what preempts are for. I've got 10hcps and RHO has, probably, 6 - 8. That leaves 22 and I don't know who has what. If LHO has the majority, I'm glad I didn't take action. If partner has a respectable hand, I will trust him to balance. I'd sure hate to double, bid 3S or 4C and catch partner with: xx, Kx, KQxxxxx, xx and you KNOW he's going to bid diamonds. .

P.J. Prabhu:  Pass. I love my hand, but am concerned about getting too high if I act. Hope pd can take some action.

Florine Walters: PASS!  I considered 3 Spades, but do not think the suit is strong enough If my left-hand opponent bids 4 Hearts--I am going to have to rely on my table presence as to whether I enter the auction with 4 Spades, with an escape to 4 Clubs if doubled.. As far as Michaels is concerned, I do not think one can play this convention as a two-way bid  at this level--I think partner should expect a strong hand for Michaels at the four level, and this hand does not qualify as such.

Herb Sachs: 4C I hope to be able to get another bid in later.

Asim Ulke: I pass and hope that the bidding comes back to me.  I am not going to bid directly over 2H with a hand that I would have passed if my RHO had passed.

Bruce Keidan: Pass. Fools rush in where wise men fare to tread.

Trudy Cohn: I will pass with this hand. If my partner can take some action, I will get very excited and insist on a game in one of my suits. Preemptive bidding is supposed to make things difficult for the opponents but I have no clear cut call.

Jim Klein: I pass!  There are two more players at the table.  I don't have enough to stay out of trouble at this level.  Sometimes pre-empts work

Gail Carns: Pass, I do not preempt preempts.

Ernie Retetagos: 3 spades. It's a little light, but it won't get any easier to get into the auction.  Partner needs very little to make it our hand.
